Break the habit
There are little habits that we all have that we are just unaware of.
For instance I bite my lip when I'm nervous or stressed, I did not realize this until someone pointed it out to me and then I because conscious of it and started to realize when I would do my annoying little habit.
What is your annoying little habit? Are you aware of it and what makes you do it? Kerry Lucey, Atmospheric Science major, sophomore, is not aware of her habit until after the fact. "I bite my nails. I have tried to stop but it doesn't work. For example, I was good for a month but I took an ESS test and bit all of them off and didn't realize it till after."
There are some habits that are just plain annoying to the people around us and we never realize our habit. For example, someone that says um at the start of everything they say. It's not hurting anyone but it can be annoying.
Erik Randlov, junior TVS major, has a habit that he is unaware of until someone points it out. It's not hurting anyone just plain annoying. "I have a habit of always jittering my right leg, when I'm sitting in a chair, and I never realize I'm doing it till someone says ‘hey stop shaking the table' and I don't really try to break it, I just let it happen."
Some habits are far from harmful and then there are others that actually are not the best for our health. Touching your face too much can actually add oil to your skin and increase the chances of breakouts. Also playing with your hair can cause an oil buildup and your hair will get dirtier faster.
According to EverydayHealth.com there are 9 bad habits that can cause pimples. This article encouraged me to do this article on habits, how there are some good ones, some annoying, and some harmful ones.
Did you know washing your skin too often can be bad as well? It is important to keep yourself clean but over washing can be bad too as it can actually make acne worse. It's best to just wash your face in the morning and then again at night and no more unless you've been working out.
Eating greasy foods can also be bad for your skin as well as your mood. Fried foods are the worst as it contains excess oil that can end up getting on our skin. It can also have other bad effects on your body, such as clogging arteries.
Unfortunately habits are not easy to break. The first step is realizing that you do it, asking yourself ‘what is my bad habit'? The second step is coming up with a plan to break your habit. For example, I have a really bad habit of biting my lips and I used to put Vaseline on my lips, this helped me break that habit real fast as it did not taste very well. However, my habit is back and I have not tried this approach in breaking the habit again.
Whatever your habit is, know that we all have our own habits and they are not easy to just stop. First you need to realize it is a habit, decide if it's bad for you or not and then make the decision if you're going to make an effort to stop or not. The best way to discover your habits is to either talk to your friends or family or pay real close attention to the things you do.
