Women's Soccer 5-0 Win After Hard Loss in Plattsburgh, NY
The Lyndon State College Women's soccer team cruised to a much-needed win on Thursday, beating Vermont Technical College 5-0. The Hornets began the day quickly, with Katylin Conley scoring just eight minutes into the match. Sophomore Sarah Cornell was the star of this rout, scoring two and assisting on two as well. Another equally bright spot in Thursday's win came from Senior Emily Strese, who picked up two goals as well as an assist. The hornets outshot their opponents 32-0, and had 17 shots on goal. Cornell led the team with eight shots.
Prior to Thursday's match, the team had traveled to Plattsburgh, N.Y., for the Cardinal Classic, where they faced Keene State last Saturday, and arch-rival Johnson State last Sunday.
During their first game of the weekend, Keene State jumped out to an early lead, scoring five first-half goals en route to a 6-0 victory.
"The first half of the first game was pretty rocky because we haven't really meshed with each other yet," said Cornell about last Saturday's match. "The second half was much better."
After their tough loss, Lyndon State regrouped and battled Johnson State to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation. It took two overtimes to finish this match, with Johnson State scoring at the 104th minute mark to seal the Hornet's fate.
"Everyone dug deep and left it all out on the field, " Cornell said about the rough loss to Johnson. "That's all you can really ask for."
Even though the Hornets left the Cardinal Classic without a goal or a win, they didn't come away from the tournament empty-handed.
"We all love this game and are dedicated to form as a team and do the best we can this season," says Cornell. "If we keep up the intensity and the hard work like we have been, I don't see any reason why we wouldn't be in the running for the NAC Championship."
The Hornets (1-2) next game is home against Regis College of Weston, Mass., on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
