The Postman Movie Review

The great films of our time are debatable: there may be a film that you love and your friend hates. It is all a matter of opinion and here is mine on The Postman, which debuted in 1997, starring Kevin Costner.

It takes place in 2013 in a post-apocalyptic world where every man, women and child are for themselves. The movie starts out with one man, The Postman (Kevin Costner) and his mule Bill. After a run-in with the dictator General Bethlehem (Will Patton), The Postman sets out to hide from this gang and their leader in hopes to regain his independence from the disorganized social life. In doing so he discovers a dead Postman and dresses in his clothes after the treacherous journey through the dark and stormy night in which The Postman almost collapses of fatigue and the cold weather beating down on him.

When morning arises The Postman sets out in his new clothes and stumbles upon a town, which has been trying to rebuild since the bombs fell. He is granted admittance when he convinces them that he is a Postman directed to deliver letters to the town inhabitants from the newly reorganized government headed by President Richard Starkey. Looking to survive and be provided with food and shelter The Postman has inspired people of all ages to hear about the reestablish connections with the rest of the country through what we refer to as "snail mail."

On the run from General Bethlehem, The Postman must hide in the mountains and escape from the gang which is out to destroy what everyone believes to be a representative of the newly founded United States of America.

After returning from hiding, The Postman comes back after the winter to find that his postal story has inspired people to take mail delivery and the reconnection of cities into their own hands. Through triumph and perseverance, what was The Postman's lie to survival becomes people's way of life and inspiration to rebuild what once was America.

I will not tell you how it ends, but I will leave finding out up to you. Rent it or buy it and see the story of a man without a plan come together with some interesting characters and fight the forces that do not want any form of government control or the old ways of living to be reconstructed.

Although, one hint I will give you is if you like Tom Petty, he may just have a surprising, yet quick appearance in this epic movie of an unlikely hero, which inspires the movement and rebuilding of the United States Postal Service. The power of the unlikely people is about to create inspiration across the nation. If you are into a well written story and a mixture of a slow and faced paced movie, you will not be saying "return to sender," when you watch this.
