WWLR
WWLR has been a very active, large part of the Lyndon State community since "sometime in the seventies," according to current general manager of the station, Tim Oliver. The WWLR radio club has made it their priority to promote the school, school activities, and other clubs through their broadcasting.
As a club, WWLR's goal is to give students their own chance to be a real live radio DJ. They also make sure that the students have as much freedom as possible so that they can express themselves whether it is musically, or through talk shows, or sports shows. This means that students have the freedom to play any genre of music they want. The radio also takes pride in playing independent and relatively new music, including local and underground bands.
The club is constantly working to bring new events and music to the college. They have been working with such labels as Victory, Oasis, and various indie and unsigned bands to put new music into the hands of the DJs. They are particularly interested in working with local and school bands to put on events and to get their music on the radio.
Currently, the station runs nearly fifty shows a week and consists of over eighty DJs. It is not just students who are welcome to broadcast, but the club also welcomes professors and staff members such as Dan Daily and Paul Searls who currently have their own shows on the station. Aside from being on the air, WWLR is also streaming online so that no matter where you are, you can listen to the program.
The staff at WWLR is relatively new, but also very hard working and dedicated to improving the station that they feel has been turned upside down in recent years. "We are trying to re-invent the station and re-establish our reputation to prove to the school that we are a strong asset as a club here at the college," commented Oliver.
The club has shown strong involvement in the community by hosting various events ranging from last year's Drag Ball to the first annual Rail Jam. This December they are hosting their first ever "Bi-Annual WWLR Radio Club Part Winter Formal Dinner Award Ceremony Thing:" a night of recognition and appreciation for radio personalities. They are always open to supporting school events as well as surrounding events in the community.
WWLR has been working to make the station the best it can be. They currently work alongside the North East Sports Network. Every Friday and Saturday night on 91.5, Lyndon Institute and St. Johnsbury Academy football game broadcasts can be heard, but that is not the only way they are involved with the community: the station has underwriting (a form of advertising) for local businesses such as the Pizza Man and Phat Kats, and have been working with professor Dan Williams to create student created news. "Looking to the future, we are always looking for ways to involve ourselves with the school, the student body, and the community," Oliver stated.
The new staff at WWLR is looking toward the future and diligently working to provide the school with a respectable and active club on campus. "We are working a number of projects of which the details I am not privileged to disclose, but I can tell you that all of us at WWLR think there will be a lot of excitement. We should be announcing some of these plans later this year and we cannot wait to see the reaction."
As far as getting involved with WWLR goes, they are at the club fair every fall, but are also constantly advertising to the student body about general meetings and events. General meetings are open to any student that wants to get involved or if they are unavailable to attend a meeting there are also scheduled office hours at the radio station when students can personally address the staff. "Getting on the air is as simple as filling out a form, getting properly trained, and recording a promo," said Oliver. "Anyone can do it."
