SGA settles business
Despite the discussion about a resolution for a vote of no confidence, the Student Government Association conducted a regular meeting as well this week.
President Carol Moore paid a visit to the meeting, answering more questions students had about the possibility of faculty and staff cuts to help a growing deficit at the college.
She talked about departments that may be considered understaffed, including atmospheric science and exercise science.
"Those are the kinds of things that we're weighing," she said. "I have to take care of every student that's on this campus today, but I also have to plan for the future."
Students worried about the futures of their favorite professors were concerned that the administration was not considering staff reductions as well, although Moore said that was not true.
"We have offered early retirement to a number of staff members," she said, although she could not specify who at this point.
The Ski and Ride club requested $300 from the general fund, and reallocation of $400 from its movie premieres to pay for an upcoming ski trip. The SGA granted the reallocation request and gave the club $390 to allow more students to go on the trip.
The Leadership Recognition club also requested $475 toward its annual leadership conference, which it was given.
Administrative Vice President Dave Daly also presented his results from a campus-wide survey regarding quality of service from Student Services. Comments from participants focused on the unfriendliness of the place.
For overall experience, the average score was 3.5 out of 5, and 3.7 out of 5 for helpfulness.
"For an office that deals directly with customers, the scores should be at least 4.5," Daly said.
The SGA accepted a resolution asking the administration to look into the practices of Student Services.
One of the sit-in organizers, Dan Haycook, encouraged students to rally together for a trip to Montpelier to speak to legislators regarding funding for LSC.
"With this great effort, maybe we can get Montpelier to hear our voices even louder than they already are," he said to applause.
