The Movie Vault: Paranormal Activity 2

I had high hopes for Paranormal Activity 2, but boy was I let down. 

Having seen the first movie and liking it enough to watch the second one, I thought that the sequel would have at least as much action as its predecessor, but I was wrong. These types of movies obviously are going to have dull moments due to the fact that the director has to set a plot line, but gosh, there were a lot of dull moments in this movie. 

The movie starts with a husband and wife coming home from the hospital after giving birth to their first son.  The family gets settled into the house with the new baby, and this is the time that we are introduced to all the characters.  There is Dan Rey, the father, Kristi Rey, the wife, Ali Rey, the daughter, and making appearances are Katie and Micah form the first movie.  Also in this movie is Martine, the Hispanic nanny that is the only one that knows something is happening, but of course no one believes her. 

After a week or so, everyone comes home and discovers what they thought to be a break in.  Nothing ends up missing but they still decide to put up a security system that included six continuously running cameras. 

Odd things start occurring at the house, conveniently when there is only one person there.  No paranormal activity occurs when there are multiple people at the residence.  There is always someone who does not believe that anything is wrong, this time it's the father.  I could not count on both my hands the number of times he said something like, "the wind blew it closed," or "maybe the dog did it."  This makes the movies comical to me, and that's not what I was looking for when I was watching the movie.  If I wanted to watch a comedy, I would have rented Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, because that is probably the funniest movie in the world.

The one good thing that I can say about this movie is that the creators did an excellent job tying both of the movies together.  There were a lot of questions that I had from the first movie that got answered by the end of this one.  The previews for Paranormal Activity 3 indicate that there will be a lot more questions answered in that one as well.

The new Paranormal Activity takes place when the two main female characters from the first two movies are children.  Again, like in the first two movies, the filming will be from handheld, and mounted VHS cameras to capture everything that occurs.  The trailer for this movie makes it seem like this will be much more frightening than the other two.  Paranormal Activity 3 comes out today and is playing at the Star 3 Cinemas in St. Johnsbury.

I suggest watching this series if you want a good story line.  I don't suggest watching this movie if you want to be frightened.  The lack of ‘spooky' material in this movie is why I didn't like this movie as much as some people did. I believe that if you name a movie Paranormal Activity there should be a good amount of just that.  All I can say is I hope the third movie is better.
