AMS Club Feature
The American Meteorological Society Club (AMS) may have a lot of atmospheric science majors, but it's open to any student with an interest in weather.
"It is one of the biggest and most active clubs on campus," said Ben Sisskind, the club's public relations officer. "We're awesome!"
The club began in the early 1970's at Lyndon State College. It currently meets on the first Wednesday of every month.
The club has an executive board consisting of seven members: president Samantha Couture, vice president Matt Dipirro, secretary George Krauszer, treasurer Laura Lenfest, community outreach Garrett Combs, historian Alison Ciaramitaro, and Ben Sisskind. On average, the club has 60-70 members per year.
Anyone who has an interest in weather is welcome to join. The club requires $10 in dues, and to be an active member you need to attend 2/3 of the meetings and help with at least five events per year. If anyone has an interest in joining you can speak with anyone on the executive board for more information.
Members participate in Spring Day and the club fair to help get their club name out on campus, as well as gather new members. The club also host many events on campus throughout the year, some related to weather such as the first inch contest, and some just for fun such as the talent show, car wash, and the winter ball in February. Members also attend an annual storm conference in March.
Their next event is taking place tonight, the talent show at 7:00 p.m. in the Alexander Twilight Theatre. There are 16 acts participating, and the club is hoping for a big turnout.
