Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) may have ‘women' in the name, but that hasn't influenced the high number of men who participate in the Lyndon State College chapter.

As of right now the club as 17 members, with the majority being males. Anyone that has an interest in media can join. For example, if you're a business major that would like to sell advertisement through radio stations then this national organization may be able to help you.

The purpose of the club is to provide support and help women in the media find jobs through the country. AWM at LSC was created in 1999 and was the first college chapter.

The executive board currently consists of Suzanne Proulx as the chapter president, Nadine Grimley as the vice president, RJ Brownell as secretary, Jarryd Guinard as treasurer and Rebecca Bevington as SGA representative.

The cost to be a member is a $30 annual fee which is covered in the club budget, and then after graduation, students can become national members for $110 a year and be considered professionals rather than students.

The club currently meets bi-weekly to discuss fundraiser ideas and possible events, as well as community service they are interested in doing. The club spend the majority of its time working with underclassman to help them figure out what media sector they want to go into.

AWM also sells popcorn at the movies on campus every Tuesday and the money helps the club with events such as its upcoming van trip, which will bring underclassman to WMUR in Manchester, NH to help them figure out what media sector they want to go into, such as editor, producer or director.

The club also has an annual conference that is at the end of this month. It's the national annual business meeting located in Washington D.C. This is a chance for the members to network as well as learn from each other ways to recruit more members.

This past summer the members were invited to go to the annual Gracies awards in Los Angeles and are hoping to be able to return again this year. Last year they volunteered at the event which made them be able to get in for free and only have to pay for their hotel and flight.

Proulx has been a member of AWM for her four years at LSC.

"It's boosted my leadership skills. [It] gave me the opportunity to speak up for budgeting and gave me the opportunity to go down for the annual business meeting and network for the future," she said.

If interested in joining the club you can contact anyone on the executive board. You can also check out the national website at: allwomeninmedia.org.
